Can anyone advise on how soon I can start running again after having orthotics fitted to sort out a biomechanical imbalance which gave me knee pain. The podiatrist who supplied them favours a very gradual return to running - months rather than weeks and I wondered what other views were. I have been wearing them in over the last three weeks, walking around with only the expected aches/stiffness in my legs. Otherwise they feel fine.
Classic of runner wanting to return to running quickly - but wise enough to recognise it might take some time ....

I would suggest you do as the podiatrist has said (sorry) I know thats not what really wanted to hear, pick your running slowly, you will know when you've over done it from the DOMS, if you are sensible it will be weeks not months, just treat it as if you are returning from a lay off period. BUT remember your orthosis will make your gait slightly different and may put a different pattern of stress on your muscle and you will be using them in a slightly different way, muscles that have not been being used properly in the past may well kick in big style now (hence the note of caution you've already been given). Hope this has made some sense for you, I'm just returning to training from a serious back problem the temptation to rush is great DONT DO IT! or you'll be sorry. Tortoise and hare mate, you know it makes sense. Good luck John Murphy

try leg extensions or leg raises for a few weeks b4 running this will strengthen your quads and take strain of the knee joint without damaging it through excercises such as squats.

I have recently injured my knee again during sport. It once again felt like it had popped. Doctor has previously said that i have not torn ligament but have brusied or something. Anyway, it has happened again and i was wondering what, if any sport can i do at the moment? I am getting extremely frustrated by doing nothing. any tips comments will be gratefully received.
