2 months ago, I started with what I thought was an overuse injury to the achilles. After training, I had pain in the lateral side of the achilles (Left leg) about 5cm above the heel bone and a noticable lump. I had no pain in this area when running but it was sore for a little while afterwards and the lump was tender to touch. I did notice a kind of pulling sensation in the medial heel area whilst running. I had no morning stiffness in the achilles. I also had a tightness/pain in my left hip/groin area even at rest.

I reduced my training and was icing the area and started an eccentric strengthening programme. There was no improvment or worsening but I decided to take 2 weeks off running to see if that helped. During this time I saw my chiropracter who worked on some misalgnment in my left hip and knee which had been causing internal rotation. He also did some work on the ankle joint. I started back running very gradually and everything seemed OK. There was still a little soreness in the achilles after each run but it was getting less each time and the groin pain was gone. However, two weeks later, I went for a short run and things did not feel right again, the pulling sensation was back in the heel and I felt that my ankle was rotating inwards more than the other side. Also the groin pain came back.

I have not run or done any other training, other than the eccentric strength exercises, for over a week. The problem is, despite not training, it seems to be getting worse. I now have stiffness in the achilles each morning and the lump seems to increase in size over night adn I also notice a tighness in the muscles under the arch. If I massage the arch with a tennis ball the stiffness eases off and the achilles lump gets much smaller. The groin pain is still there and I have noticed that ankle inversion & eversion seem restriced on the left when compared to the right. Dorsifexion appears to be the same but there is increased plantar flexion on the left. The groin pain and ankle stiffness are very noticeable when I sit cross legged.

Does anyone have any idea what is going on here? I feel that there is something misaligned in my ankle joint that my chiropracter put back but if that is the case and I get it put back again, how do I stop it happening again?

Any advice would be very much appreciated.
Thank you
Helen
