I'm 56, male. Started distance running at 50. Ran 5 varied marathons, no injuries. October of 2006 turned right ankle. Saw orthopedist, got non-custom inserts, did physical therapy, but picked up training again in Jan 07. Training was miserable, did it anyway. Finally got some indicin (NSAID, I think), stopping most pain. Then pulled something else same leg. Calf discomfort, so gave in and had to lay low a few weeks before the July 07 (Australia) marathon and got a bit better. Completed the race, mostly grueling and miserable because I planned this long trip and I was going! Stupid.
An MRI after returning shows a ruptured posterior tibial tendon. It's simply not there. The ortho guys talk about replacement tendon surgery (can't fix the PTT apparently; too much use, just breaks again) or bone fusion. The long term consequences can be nasty turned foot, walking like Quasimodo.
Anyone know what to do next? Any experience here?
Any PT activities to help? Must I have surgery?
Depressed,
Nick
