I've got horrible shin splints that occur off and on in both legs. I've tried changing my shoes to more comfortable trainers but that's not always possible. Are there any exercises that anyone knows will help relieve this?

After dancing too much at the office party, I've now got a sprained ankle (damn high heels!). Any ideas of how to strengthen it and get rid of the problem?

Shin splints are a strange one. i can go for months without a problem and then went for a run on Sunday and got them. i think it is due to very subtle chages in running angle.

I would suggest running on grass or track but if you need to run on roads choose a hilly cost as the change in angle seems to release the problem.

The classic strech is to point your to backwards and put bodweight onto foot. This helps releive the pain but does not prevent.

I get them too, at varying degrees of severity. I got them so bad last year that I could barely walk. I get them after training a lot on hard surfaces and when I wear high heels out for a night. Ever since I got special foot ortothics made by a physio & invested in less glamourous shoes, I am fine... they are a bit pricey, but if it works...! I work on keeping my calf muscles loose too, which apperas to be a universal prescription.

I had these recently and yes I can share your pain. A friend of mine who is a sports massuer recommended using your fingers to really get at the point of the pain and give them a good massage ( to the point where it actually hurts) Use a good cream as a lubricant either an ibuprofen based one or something similar. After that ice it. Rest a little or train on a bike rather than run. After 2 weeks mine had gone and have not been back again.

Good luck !

Magstress: As long as you have a concrete diagnosis of shin splints there are many web sites that you can visit. One of my favourite is

www.sportsinjuryclinic.net/cybertherapist/front/lowerleg/shinsplints.htm

One thing you should be aware of is the membrane between the Tibia and Fibula - the Interosseous Membrane can become injured, torn or inflamed. Often a misdiagnosis of shin spints is given. If the remedy for shin splints does not work, then perhaps another diagnosis and treatment is appropriate. :)

Try sports inserts.. they helped me with my pain and get back into running.. I don't run without inserts even during races. and haven't had an injury in over 2years. of increased mileage. I find that even expensive running shoes skimp on inserts.so give them a try.. I'll bet they will help you!.
