8 months ago I had a skiing accident and fell on my left arm at 60mph!

I had no pain at the time but some 5 hours later back at the chalet a very sharp pain/ache developed in my upper arm coupled with shoulder blade pain across my back. The local French Physio said I had injured my biceps tendon. Taking paracetomol eased the pain but I had it all week. On return to the UK my regular physio said I had experienced a partial dislocation (sublaxation posterior) and the upper arm pain was rotator cuff (infraspinatus) referred pain. I proceeded to have three months of physio therapy, which helped with the shoulder blade pain. I have had lots of treatment for the rotator cuff problem, and had Xrays to make sure its ok. But the upper arm pain although much less remains. Front raises really bring it home when you get to 12Kg (28lb) yet I can do way more than this on the other arm. Bench presses cause a slight pain at high reps, but the strength is unaffected in fact I am doing my best benches ever currently. Bicep curls are affected but not too much, strength is down about 10% in the affected arm, but its my left arm anyway and I am right handed so this is to be expected.

If it really is the biceps tendon (long head or short head?) how could I tell for sure. As I said above the only excercise that is really affected is front raises and this causes the pain. If it was a rotator cuff problem I would expect my whole shoulder workout to suffer but it does not.

If any one has any thoughts let me know, because 8 months in I am getting fed up with it. Profile wise I do bodybuilding and cardio, train with weights 3 times a week, regularly run 15 miles a week and cycle 40 miles or so a week.

thanks

Pete

sublaxation

Hi there, well about 2 yrs ago i did the exact same thing partial dislocation/sublaxation, to my right arm but playing rugby. Had vertually exactly the same symptoms as you for, had physio etc after the intial injury.Pain cleared up slightly but then worsened over the next six months. Arms and shoulder strenght lessen and my right tricep began to shrink. Started then experiencing problems when bench, like the shoulder joint wasnt "fitting" quite right, that is was getting looser.Pain got alot worse and started to get considerable cracking crunching and popping sounds. Got to the point were i had to pull out from my contest prep cus my symmetry had been effect that much due to muscle weakness. Decided then to go private, i got sent for mri's and xray(mri is the only was yo assess the soft tissue damage, x-rays will only show bone associated injury) The mri came back to say i had significant increases in sinus in the supraspinatus tendon and rotator cuff(swelling due to irritation). the surgeon said that i had most likey stretched the capsule of the shlouder aswell as damaged the muscle. But had also damaged the labrum(a ring of ligament-like tissue that keep the shoulder jiont stable),hence theb unstable feeling in the shoulder. Six weeks ago he scoped the shoulder and found the labral tear and capsule laxiaty(looseness). He then repaired the labrum and did a capsule shift to tighten things up by open repair as that is more reliable than arthroscopey in people who undertake contact sports and weightlifting. Just out of the sling now and it going to be another 6 wks before im close to normal,so bit early to tell how well it worked but the is a very high success rate with this surgery. My suggestion would be to look up you nearest private shoulder specialist and get to see them and have an MRI to see what going on. You can still try NHS but i had absolutely no luck even one gp told me that the NHS doesnt have time or money for people as young as me with such minor problems. hope this helps and take a look at this website too

I dislocated my left shoulder 13 times before I had surgery. The only time my shoulder acts up is when I do exercises that require me to push the weight over my head. Shoulder presses, etc. When I do bench press now I do it with dumbbells. I don't really use heavy weight either on front or side raises. I use what makes my shoulder feel comfortable. I do pushups to help build my strength in my shoulders. I feel no pain from that.

This is fairly easy to diagnose with ultrasound. Can also examine the rotator cuff at the same time. Shoulder dislocation/instability is a completely different problem and the injuries in the shoulder associated with this are best examined by MRI arthrography (mri scan after dye injected into the shoulder joint.

i have dislocated my left arm 15 may be more.i had a normal x ray taken after the dislocations asked by my usual doctor. Thay then said you need to rest your shoulder/arm for 3 weeks i had constant pain realy bad.then rested i asked for pysio given whilst having pysio my arm dislocated again and again.i told my doc he sent me for c.e scan nothing wrong the consultant said.the pain got worse and worse aventualy the consultant sent me for a m.r.i he said the soft tissue from the socket and the head of the bone has torn off the hole where the arm sits in has come away and you also have a hole in your shoulder the tendans are streched too well also need to shorten them he then said what has the doc given you for pain relief.....this is now 4 months still waiting for a operation nhs is crap.
