I was a keen goalkeeper for 20 years, however, had to give up the sport 3 years ago because of continual pain in my right buttock (i'm right footed) and lower back/SI Joint, which has not abated. I strongly believe that the repetitive powerful distance kicking, solely with my right leg, which over the years became progressively more difficult, was a contributory factor.

My pain now is in peaks and troughs and is exacerbated after any light physical activity. The worst pain is when I seem to very easily strain the SI joint on the right side, but I also suffer from constant muscular/nerve type pain and tenderness in the right buttock.

I have tried various treatments, including chiropractor (diagnosed as right short leg), physio (no idea), osteopath (not sure, but thought it maybe disc related), doctor who referred me to spinal consultant where MRI scan (showed degeneration at L2/3, pristine discs below), consultant referred me to physio (unsuccessful) and pilates (aggravated it).

I am now looking into every other possible explanation via the internet for my ongoing problems and how best to treat these, before I waste any more money!

I have been prescribed various pain killlers that do help a little and I recently tried a couple of steroid injections into the cavity in the tail bone (sorry don't know technical term), which gave pain reduction in the "nerve type pain".

Driving and lifting any load seem to be the worst offenders. Accupuncture can give some temporary relief, but what I am looking for is a long term cure, which will allow me to live my life again!

I don't know how relevant this maybe, however, my muscles generally feel firmer/stronger on the left buttock and where I think it is attaching to the SI joint, also my left hamstring definitely feels tighter and less flexible than the right side.

Also, I seriously broke my left foot when I was four years old, and even though this has never given me any problems in itself, it is at least one whole shoe size larger than my right foot!

Please help!!!

I'm a cyclist and have experienced very similar pains in and around si joint and buttock. I found yoga helped.

Hi Max,

Thanks for your reply.

I'm looking into a few things at the moment, brought about by responses to my posting, one of these being yoga!

As you have probably found, it is just so frustrating, for me (and the wife  ).

Even though I have found some relief from acupuncture, I still can't sit down for any period of time and feel comfortable, which is going to be a nightmare wth Christmas approaching!

To TomR I came across your comments whilst looking for some way to manage my buttock/si joint pain. I was so surprised to see how similar my symptoms were to yours. I have seen physios, osteopaths, had si joint injection,a clear MRI scan and various doctors who have so far not been able to help me. The tingling from my knee to hip comes and goes but is worse with driving and sitting. The buttock pain makes me limp at times and sometimes it eases for a few days.
As your posting was a while ago I wondered if you had found any answers or anything that helps recently.
Many thanks.

Hi guys,

There's lots of confusion about SI joint dsyfunction and I am not that surprised that many of the practitioners you saw couldn't help. A few years ago I happened across this paper (www.kalindra.com/rounds.pdf) and it quite literally changed my practice - and I'm a remedial massage therapist, not an osteopath - yet.

The paper says it all but basically anterior rotation of one ilium is by far the most common cause of the kinds of symptoms you describe. The problem is that most practitioners diagnose posterior rotation of the other ilium. Why? Because they are following the pain. In fact more often than not the pain is on the opposite side to the anteriorly rotated ilium.

Read the paper and let me know your thoughts.

Kind regards

Henry

i have been suffering from lower back issues over the past few months and it soon started to move into my right buttock. One of the things that helps is physical therapy in the water. Another, which I strongly recommend is Svaroopa yoga.

Hi,
again I also came across your comments whilst trying to self diagnose my problem.
I have seen doctors and more recently specialist and have taken courses of anti inflamatories through to lower spine steroid injections latest.
nothing seems to work and I have now been advised to have physio, hence as I say turning self research /diagnosis.
I was very interested after typing in my symptoms to come across near identical symptoms.
Have just printed artical Henry reccommended to read.
any other info or ideas would be appreciated,
David

hey everyone
my problem is similar to yours tom, and by the way i do wish you a speedy recovery...
i have a pain when i am running or probably i am kicking the ball... i was a keen striker... but this tackle i had five months ago, that caused this. Since then i had a CT scan which showed sacralisation of l5 vertebra. but the ortho says that it doesnt matter and this doesnt usually have an effect on this. there is not intense pain always but yes, it gets more when i sit or walk for too long..
