But seriously,

Can anyone shed any light on a mysterious toe injury.

1st espisode of inflamed big toe joint (just beneath the nail), occurred after running in old trainers. Loss of mobility, swelling, redness and tender to touch. Gone in just over a week after ice, brufen gel and rest.

2nd episode after a light static lunges session where slight irritation was felt whilst on back foot. Ran the next day, this time in proper trainers as instructed by me. Later that day the toe inflammation was back showing a red arc and swelling around the joint.

Debilitating and frustrating for poor athelete. (Athelete long time and advanced fitness) Any ideas anyone?

Has a stress fracture been rule out Angel?
Is there any history such as stubbing the toe, dropping something on it etc?
I've had someone with a deep ingrowing toenail on the big toe which caused tenderness, swelling etc.

Hi Angel

I have suffered with big toe problems too. Especially when pushing off to run or during lunges etc etc

It might be worth checking if you have hallux rigidus, whic is a lack of range if motion in the great toe!

You should be able to dorsi-flex your big toe about 65-90 degrees (approximately). Mine would only go to around 45 degrees. A good way to treat this is to mobilise the joint by traction, then gliding up down and around a couple of times a day.

However, make sure that this is the case first, as you may irritate it further otherwise.

Hope this helps, cheers,

James
