Exercise for the 'mature!' adult /elderly has overwheling support from clinical trials and subjective feedback from the clients themself.

Trials have shown strength training has improved bone density, increase mineral content of bone. This can help the age related problem of osteoperosis.

Trials have shon balance and mobility are improved with strength training, Tai Chi and other types of classes (yoga). This may have an effect on the amount of falls an elderly person may sustain or the serverity of it. With falls prvention classes popping up in most leisure centres, they must be doind some good for the primary care trust (PCT in the UK) to be funding some of them.

Range of movement in joints can be maintained and may increase which may lead to decrease in osteoarthritic problems (pain, innmobility).

Strength training has had an effect on the overall ability to perform every day teasks as opening heavy shop doors etc. The ability to walk further for longer can also be increased.

Major effects of c.v. work are the same as any individual completing c.v. work. The reduction heart disease and its associated risk factors (hypertension, high cholesterol, obesity) can all be reduced with c.v. work. People who suffer from heart disease, whether it be a heart attack patient, angina sufferer, artherosclerosis, will benefit from a controlled exericse programme.

A large part of exercise with the elderly is the social side of it. Many studies have shown that if there is a group exercise class, the adherence is greater than an individual training on their own. Pschologically it can be benificial.

The Government has set upthe National Service Framework (NSF) which looks at the population groups that would benefit from exercise. All the above have been targeted and most recently people with psychological problems are being addressed. Although the elderly are not specifically targeted, the groups that are are sadly the ones that the elderly suffer from most as part of chronilogical aging.

BEFORE STARTING AN EXERCISE PROGRAMME, ALWAYS CONSULT A QUALIFIED FITNESS PROFESSIONAL.

Qualifed personnel will hold a Wright Foundation Exercise Referral Certificate, or the Gayton Group equivalent. Anyone wishing to be trained for post heart surgery or post heart attack should look for qualified in individuals with a Bristish Association Coronary Rehabilitation (BACR) certificate.

I was wondering about that also, so I went over to the local nursing home and saw an old elderly man rocking on the front porch. I asked him if the real reason he exercised was for the benefits of what Alex had given. He replied that it sure sounded good, but the real reason is that he won't have to buy so much Viagra, :)

There are many benefits of exercise for elderly people. Through exercising they can keep themselves fit & fine. They can join yoga classes, by which they can maintain themselves & this would also make them to interact with many other peoples whom they can share there talks and easily enjoy there time. Now a days there are many such elderly care centers established where they are treated with love, affection & care this might make them happy in that position also.

Another path to fitness is through Yoga, which is a fantastic form of elderly exercise. Yoga is suitable for anyone with any amount of movement at all, and everyone is encouraged to take things slowly, and only go as far as feels comfortable. A class consists of a series of gentle stretches, poses and breathing techniques, and the relaxation is deep and satisfying. As a result of practicing yoga regularly your muscles will be elongated, you will be more flexible, more relaxed and have more energy every day. A few minutes a day is all you need to begin, but when you start seeing the benefits you should join a class to learn more and take your increase in fitness even further.
