I am currently writing a physical training package for wannabe PTI`s on a NVQ Level 2, and i can`t find any publications listing contraindicated exercises. The reason behind the contraindication or the exercises themselves. Is ther anybody out there who can answer my query. John

You will find it hard to find a single book or publication that will list all contra-indicated exercises - I too have looked.

I have learnt from experience and general reading of texts about specific exercises that are detrimental to joint health and integrity.

You may be surprised that upright rows should be contra-indicated due to the excess internal rotation as the arm is riased. This does not allow the greater tubercle of the humerous to clear the acromion. This increases the impingement of the shoulder (with proper form - riase elbows as high as possible, this is greatly magnified).

Rotator cuff degeneration, tendinitis and bursitis are results of prolonged exposure to this exercise. The pain may not be immediate but appear days later or while performing a bench press or other pressing movements.

Other exercises that may lead to you to contra-indicate them is the Dumb bell pullover. They can stretch the connective tissue that forms the vertical line between the abs. This can tear leaving you with a hernia of hte media nrectus . The bulge of the hernia will increase with increased strain. The posterior shoulder is also put under a large amount of stress. This can lead to pain before and musculo-skeletal injury occurs.

Check out the 7 minute rotator cuff book for a few more exercises suggestions to stay away from during the session.

Hi

One exercise that comes to mind is the sit up with fingers interlocked behind the neck.
