me and my friend had a conversation about cycling, and he said that if you cycle for prolonged periods of time then you will utilise slow twitch muscle fibers i don't dissagree with him but im pretty sure when you cycle up the hill you use explosive muscular actions which in turn work the fast twitch muscle fibers, but my question is, when doing an aerobic work out is it better to run or to cycle when incorperating sports specific training at the same time?

It depends how you climb the hill. If it's short and you get out of the saddle to power over the hill then you are working more fast twich fibres, but if you stay in the saddle and maintain a sustainable output you are building muscle strength with slow twich fibres.
By doing long rides you build more slow twich fibres. Very long rides tend to every muscle in your legs (I'm doing rides 2-300km and every muscle in my legs hurt the next day).
What type of training are you aiming for?
