Electric Muscle Stimulators (EMS)

I have only ever experienced E it with paraplegic or quadraplegic people. This more to get them standing up and or for bowel control. These were medical grade systems.
The ones you tend to buy work at different frequencies to that of the medical ones and different from that of the body so have a limited effect on muscle growth.
Plus is stimulating a muscle to do nothing. When performing a movement, the muscles are stimulated to carry out that pattern through programming of the brain. With EMS there is no pattern/movement to follow just stimulation. This may cause problems with muscle recruitment when performing a movement.

To update everyone I've had my EMS equipment for about 4 days now. I am happy to say that the back spasm is no longer an issue and I can sleep again. The machine was easy to use with preset programs or full manual control. A physiotherapist contact sent me a list of reference texts on EMS so I think I will buy one simply to fully understand this technology. It will be interesting to see if over the long haul if treatment can retrain muscles and keep spasms at bay.
