hi. i am 16 yr old. i do track and field, and basketball in the fall. right now i am training for the 100m, 200m, and long jump. i have run into some problems with my long jump. my coach says that i need to get a higher vertical. and i have 6 wks until my track season starts. i was wondering if jump shoes work. i have heard that a shoe called jump soles are good. is their another way that i can get a higher vertical in 6 wks?? also any advice on sprinting would be appreciate it.

maybe think about doing some 'plyometric' training. Do a google search, or look at Brian Mac's web site.

For the plyometric exercises, look through this forum as there are some good posts and safety notes posted by some people who have good experience and knowledge of the area.

www.exrx.net have good plyometric exercises to get the basics right.

For sprint work, especially for field events, it is worth subscribing to Brianmac's website www.spors-coach.net as got some really good programmes there. His other site www.brianmac.demon.co.uk again is good but not sure if they have the sprint and field training progammes you require.

You may want to look at the use of hurdles, ladders and canes to perform some SAQ stuff. There are some good sites for this again need to do a search as cannot remember them. www.saqinternational.com gives some background and books which are ideal to purchase.

Also look at www.performbetter.com if looking to purchase equipment and training guides for this type of training. It is an Amercian based company and offer some great stuff from recongnised conditioning specialists like Gary Gray, Gray Cook, Vern Gambetta to name a few. They all have good stuff on what you are looking for.
