For those that were not able to attend the NSCAA Convention, here is a brief summary of my presentation and from Don Kirkendall's presentation. In talking with Dr. Kirkendall and summarizing the convention, it was extremely encouraging to see that each of the presentations on injury prevention were so well attended!

Ø Optimal training to match ratio for youth is 4-5:1

Ø Average of 2.1 injuries per match

Ø 1-2 injuries per player per season

Ø Review of various prevention programs in the last five years and their success rates (as high as 83% decrease in injury rate in 6 week program

Ø In-depth review of the PEP program and the Sportsmetrics program. What is positive about each program? What is missing from both that will impact future directions of on-field training? (answer: combining deceleration training with total body strength and stability)

Ø ACL Tears- the earlier the first, the greater the risk for the second tear. Females are 4-6 times more likely to suffer an ACL injury than males

Ø An assymmetry of 15% or greater weakness between lower extremities can result in a 2.6 greater chance of injury.

Ø Implementing an injury prevention program just 15 minutes each workout included in the warm-up can have a high success outcome rate of keeping your players in the game.

Ø Training implications for program design:
-include deceleration mechanics
-include landing mechanics
-include core stability/mobility
-include single leg strength exercises
-out of all of the research, quality
training time is what yielded the best
chance of soccer success

There is some very exciting research presently going on at Duke University and other places soon to be published here by mid 2006. As these impactful studies are released, I will post them here for coaches to review.

all the best,
