Does any one know the correct alignment when doing leg lunges. I have heard that your knee should be in line with middle toe and shouldn't pertrude past the toes, also that the foot should be facing forward and not to the side to avoid miss-alignment of the hips? Is this correct and is it also the case for squats and streches etc?

Thanks, Joey

That is the gerneral rule. If you find your knee well past the toes, then you are probably leaning forward to much with shoulders in front of the hips. Both feet should be pointing forward with back leg straight, driving the hips forwards and keeping the shoulders above the hips.

With squatting, depending on the athlete, determines how their squat looks. A 7 foot basketball player will look very different to a 5 foot 7 inch weight lifter. Some one with long legs will find it hard not to bring knees over the toes. This means that they will be unable to squat as deep for safetly and anatomical reasons.

Most comprehensive texts will give you good info on this - Strength Training Anatoy by Delivier is ok for the basics although not necessarily diagramatically correct. Look at www.exrx.net They have some good moving images of exercises with descriptions and teaching points
