Hi there,
I know stretching is a popular subject on all message boards and this topic may have been disscussed before but I am keen to know if anyone has heard of or employed the stretching technique developed by Nikos Apostolopoulos called Microstretching.

Essentially this form of stretching is performed at 30-40% of percieved maximum stretching effort (100% = pain), once or twice per day, holding the stretch for 60 seconds. The technique was developed to improve flexibility, aid recovery and regeneration and aid the breakdown of scar tissue.
Any thoughts?

If you listen to some physio's they will give advocate the same type of guidelines - frequent stretching thoughout the day holding up to 60 seconds - better adaptations than 3 x week etc. This is something that I would use for improve flexibility. The point made about percieved maximal stretching is interesting. I would agree with the statement although never looked at it on a scale rating. Instructions are to only stretch to the point of when a stretch is not overally painful - i dont know if this would equate to a 30-40% percieved stretch or not?
I understand the method about increasing parasympathetic nervous system function to aid recovery etc but dont necessarily agree with the point about breaking down scar tissue. Scar tissue is a muscle density problem and not flexibility problem. Because the nature of scar tissue is very fiberous and stronger than the surrounding soft tissue, stretching will improve the soft tissue flexibility and not affect the scar tissue. Density issues need to be broken down with tissue manipulation wheather that is a soft tissue specialist or foam rolling etc. Micro stretching I believe will work more on length than density issues.
Apart from that one point, as with most training systems/activities has a role in physical development.
