hello, i have recently just finished reading a book on the benifits of eating organic raw/live foods and i am now gradually changing my diet to eating only live foods with the exception of bread and maybe 1 or 2 cooked meals a week to include some chicken or fish. I am currently reading a second book on live foods as well as a sports nutrition book. I think anyone interested in maintaining long term health might enjoy reading a book on organic live food diets. so many products including produce and meat in our super markets contain unhealthy substances including pesticides, herbicides, other unnatural chemicals or have been irradiated or genetically engineered. since these things have been proven to diminish health i believe they also affect our athletic performance. so anyway i was just wondering if there are any athletes on this forum who eat mainly organic raw foods?

Hi :) My name is Jane
I have been a raw vegan food athlete for 3 years and totally recommend it.
You will have to becareful of a few things to maintain in your diet, like ensuring B12, Calcium, iron and adequate complete protein intake, but this will come ok once you know the foods that supply this.
Please come back to me on any questions

Hi all
I cant agree enough about the benefits of organic foods, however a vegan approach is not for all.
It may suit those that are 'carb types' who do not efficiently metabolize fats and proteins or they may bne called slow oxidisers, but then there are those (like me!) who are fast oxidisers and need high purine protein foods and fat to slow the digestion of carbohydrates that they burn through quickly.
There is no 'one size fits all' diet. Bu i strongly believe organic food is the best approach - especially when you study the difference between organic v commercially farmed foods. Cheers

Hi James
Thank for your reply, can you explain what you mean by slow oxidisers, and fast oxidisers - haven't heard that term before. :?:
Could you also explain what you mean by high purine potein? again havenit heard this either before
I agree that everyone is unique. That is true. The diet I follow is completely RAW Vegan no cooked food. This has given me exceptional health. I believe LIVE foods are the key to true health and vitality and believe cooked foods are dead foods. I am a triathlete and can manage to train 2 times a day which are both hard sessions. I believe that if a diet works for you stick by it.
Would love your views on a RAW vegan diet
cheers

Hi Jane
A fast oxidiser in fairly simplistic terms is someone that burns through carbohydrates quickly, and therefore should eat more protein and fat than carbohydrates to slow down the digestion of carbohydrates in their bodies to prevent the yo yo effect of blood sugar levels.
A slow oxidiser (which you probably are) is someone that does not efficiently metabolize fats and proteins (when eaten alone) and therefore eat a proportionately larger amount of carbs to meter the fats and protein.
Purines are a type of amino acids prevalent in dark meats such as chicken legs/thighs (as opposed to breast) red meat, sardines, anchovies etc.
And again - i think a raw vegan diet is suitable for some people (like yourself) but not for everyone. I would absolutely die on a diet like that - i need the other end of the scale!
Thats why i assess all the guys a i play rugby with to see which is their 'metabolic type' and there is a whole mixed bag in there, so there is definately no one size fits all approach.
And i do agree that the less the food is cooked the better.
Hope this is a bit clearer, cheers

hello, wow its been a while since i checked this forum, i didn't realize people had replied :D thanks. reading what james wild posted i guess im a fast oxidiser but ill have too look more into that.
Raw Jane- Id like to know what percentage of your diet is raw...do you eat bread or dehydrated foods? im still not eating the way id like to and probably wont until i get my own place. i was just wondering what are your favorite foods or foods you would consider the most important in your diet? i have been doing a little research on the internet on "super foods" like chlorella, spirulina, bee pollen, goji berries, and young coconut. im not looking for a magic potion or anything but these foods seem like they could contribute to good health.
have a nice day

 Hi Swizzle
Would love to help you. My diet is all raw, I do not cook a thing.
My diet is based on all things that are fresh - fruit, vegetables, nuts, seeds and sprouts, and also fermented foods such as saukervault and cider vingear, and fermented grains and nuts, nut milk and smoohies
Being a Raw Triathlete I have to ensure I have complete protein in my diet, this would also be essential for non athletes too.
That being, mixing plants proteins that make up complete protein, I can allaborate further if you wish, but generally I do take spirulina, soyer and sprouted chickpeas and wheat berries for all round protein together with tofu.
Other parts of my diet are lots of different kinds of fruit and vegs everyday, sprouts and wheatgrass
I only eat organic foods and never touch unorganic. I buy only from organic wholesale shops and buy fresh either everday or other day
My health is fantasic
I also do highly recommend that you take a Multivitamin and antioxidant supplements everyday, like I do. The soil to day is depleted of minerals due pesticides and other things and convenience foods have taken off the most peoples diets which do not supply our bodies with the nutrients we need
I take USANA HEALTH SCIENCES supplements and they come highly recommended. I am an associate and would be willing to give you more details. Should you wish to visit my website please do. www.rawinspiration.usana.com
I do hope this is all very useful to you and please do not hesitate to come back to me at at time for any advice on the raw diet or health
cheers

Hi Aussie Steve, :D
I totally agree there are some foods that do pose health risks to us if eaten, such as those you mentioned. Beans and lentils however can be soaked and sprouted, the sprouting process gets rid of the trypsin inhibitors and the sprouts themselves have enormous amounts of vitamins and minerals
available to us :)
I sprout all beans and eat them this way and mix these in my salads or vegs and blend them into dressings etc
I agree Barley Grass is a great food and so is Wheatgrass. I grow my own Wheatgrass and Barley Grass and juice it. It is much sweater freshly grown and juiced. You should try it.
You mentioned that you had studied vitamin losses from cooking by various of methods. I would love to know for interest how you studied this subject and what results you got? Would you be willing share this with me?
I am a true believer of raw veges, I blend my veges with fruit to make smoothies and these taste brilliant. I also grate veges to make vegetable patties and dehydrate them, or grate and blend them into raw soups.
yes, I drink loads of water, probably 4-5 litres a day but not just through drinking water but through my diet of fruits and vegs etc.
As a student in Clinical Nutrition I would like to contribute to your subject of vitamin and mineral supplements.
There are many brands out there on the shelves of stores and it is most difficult to understand what would be the best brand to buy for quality and absorption.
To contribute to your question on how are supplements absorbed
and are they actually absorbed? I would like to mention that supplements need to be bioavailable to the human cell for them to be asborbed. Most supplements in the stores are not manufactured to be absorbed this way so most of the supplement is not absorbed and you could say you would have expensive urine! :?
It has been said we are what we eat but a more accurate definition is
we are what we absorb. It is the bioavailability fo the nutrients we ingest and more importantly the cells ability to absorb those nutrients.
It is true that the body is made up of 100 Trillian Cells
So it is important to search for a product that has been scientifically researched by the company in the area of cellular nutrition ie human cell culture. The supplements need to contain raw natural substances which can be absorbed and used easily by the body.
When I was searching for a good high quality supplement, I came across one of which I did not find on the shelves of the stores, but through a contact with a friend, he introduced me to another brand of supplements much superior than the ones sold in health stores. I take a brand called Essentials manufactured by USANA Health Sciences
as mentioned, USANA are a scientific research company in Cellular nutrition and so manufacture supplements that feed the human cell.
I took the supplement I was totally impressed with it I decided to join the company as an associate.
All the best
