hi everyone
i recently qualified through A.C.E. as a pt. i am still a college student but i want to start doing pt on a part time basis. does anyone have any advice as to which way would be best to go about it( i am starting part time in a new gym but i doubt they will let me use the facility for personal training until they get to know me a bit better) i will have access to the college gym though.
also i am hoping to go to australia(melbourne and Sydney) in october for a year and i want to get a job in the industry over there. Anybody from those parts know if iv got a realistic chance of employment even as an instructor in a gym or do ye have any web addresses i could use to apply for a job before i leave.
thanks, hurler

You could start by going through the telephone directory to locate gyms and then searching google to locate those that have web pages. yellowpages.com.au would be a good start.
Did you intend to work in Melbourne or Sydney? They are 600miles apart.
I'd like to keep in touch to find our how you go. I live in Newcaslte NSW.

Brian

There's a couple of major gyms that come to mind:
http://www.zesthealthclubs.com.au/
(requires qualification as Body Trainer - course through Les Mills www.lesmills.com)
http://www.fernwoodfitness.com.au/
(female only gym - but do have some male instructors if necessary)
Those gyms have franchises all over Australia

Hurler,
I am from the states and had a cert. when I came to Australia. I still had to get certified and registered with the Australian fitness industry. They will let you show prior learner to get a cert iii (gym instructor), but you have to have a cert iv to do personal training as of 1 Jan, 2005. As for getting into a gym that should be no problem as there are always openings, you just have to find them. I am currently in Sydney and can tell you that can go to http://www.fitnessnsw.com.au/ to check out New South Wales info or try http://www.fitnessnetwork.com.au or http://www.fia.com.au/ for certification information. Hope this helps and good luck!

Yes, you will be able to get a job in most gyms with your qualifications, but if you want to do personal training you will have to work on getting the certs for it over here. They do courses by correspondence if you would like to do it that way and have the time to work on those certs now. Let me know where you end up and I may be able to help you with a job if you move to the Sydney area. Good luck!

Hi, I live a few hours out from melbourne and run Fitopia fitness and life style coaching. I am allways looking for qualified relief staff as I am the full extent of the company at the moment. I would love a bit of a break. I work out of the Grampians region which is also known for it's great rock climbs and bush walking. I am currently commissioned to work with the local aboriginal co-op to train their guys and help upgrade their gym and to train staff. Get in contact with me and we can talk further.
Try these web sites. www.fitnessnetwork.com.au www.vicfit.com.au
Cheers.

G'Day from Down Under hurler, looks like you've got all the info you need. Coming from Ireland to Australia though, I would recommend one thing - ACCLIMATISE. In summer here, we have temperatures that'll knock you over pretty fast if you're not used to training in them. Take it slow when you first get here mate. Health and Strength.
