Hi,
I was wondering if anybody has any experience with portable lactate testing tools. I've seen some advertisied on http://www.lactate.com/lactatescout.html

although I've no heard how reliable or accurate they are.

Anybody out there, got any experience with tools like this.

Thanks
Geoff

Your posting brings to mind a question that I would like to have answered at the same time as your query. It's concerning the pertinence of lactate blood sampling. Somehow I seem to be getting the feeling that the results of lactate blood sampling may not the "end all" guide to intensity prescription as it was thought it was 10 years ago.
Cheers,
Koach

Geoff,
While lacate testing has been used as a successful method in elite level athletes of various sports, it is now a hot topic as to whether there truly is a lactate threshold. A few questions for you:
What age group/gender are you presently working with?
What is your ultimate outcome for wanting to use a product like this?

I may have a few suggestions for you depending on your objectives.

Hi,
I was intending to use this with cyclists age ranging from 30-40yrs old. The plan would be to use the lactate tool in conjunction with a powertap to perform a load test to determine power at lactate threshold. I accept it will not be as accurate as a lab environment but would be useful to get 'informal' checkpoints or for determing starting points for new club members.

Hi Geoff,
we use an tool called powerlact. I am really satisfied with. But you have to keep in mind that all results can only be helpful for planning training-intensity if you use the results of two or more tests in line and discover tendencies for every single athlete.
I don#t believe that lactat tests are the "non plus ultra" but they can give be helpful and give at least an idea for the adequate training impact.

Don't forget also to look at the costs for the teststripes etc. They vary from manufacturer to manufacturer...

Perhaps you can cooperate with an laboratory near by you. It is not unusual to get the hollow-ware and the other needed things from them and let them evaluate the blood of the athletes.
in this case you are sure about the accuracy and you don't have to buy a tool by yourself.

Cheers Julius
