I am discovering that although I am in very good shape I am suffering from the effects of aging. Most apparently in my golf game, I've lost about 20% of my distance. I'm 67, I used to have a 2 handicap, I still hit the ball solidly. What exercises should I be using to reverse the loss of fast-twitch fibres and get some of my distance back? I play over 40s soccer and can outsprint about 60% of my fellow players. I bench press about 200 pounds and can easily squat over 300 pounds. It appears that I have the wrong kind of strength, or is it these darned fast-twitch fibres?

Hi Henry

I think you may need to look at your exercise selection. The main movement occuring in golf is rotation of the torso, so will bench pressing 200 pounds help you? In short, no.

There is no real correlation between bench pressing and golf performance (actually most sports too). You may need to focus on core coordination and introduce some rotational exercises into your program if you want to increase the distance you hit the ball.

Thanks James! I have a pretty balanced exercise program I don't focus on any one set of muscles but try to work as many areas as possible (time permitting). My objective is overall fitness, I usually start my program with a 20 or 30 minute hard run on the elliptical trainer. I have noticed this degredation of distance off the tee in golf over the last 6 or 7 years. I have read that part of the aging process is the elimination of the fast twitch muscle fibres and was wondering if this was reversable with exercise.

i'm jealous of your golf handicap.....

anyway... look at what is important when it comes to hitting a golf ball far

1) club head speed

2) ball compression time

Train golf specific movements in order to be able rotate your shoulders through faster.

why not get a swing aid that uses wind resistance and practice swinging the club with that on it. when you take it off you'll be able to swing faster

2) ball compression.....this comes down to technique.
