Gday all,

i've just purchased a chute to use for resistance during sprint training. Any ideas on the best way to use it. I've been alternating between using it for 200m sprint and then sprinting without it.

Thanks in advance

Jamie

I would not sprint with it for 200 metres. It should be used as underspeed before removing and repeating the acceleration drills to feel the potentiation effect of the chute. Running for long distances with it (over 30-40m) will start to negatively change running mechanics. Beacuse you have to drive with the shoot on as you would while accelerating from a start, you do not want to continue to drive like that through the entire race. It is best to improve acceleration.

Plus using for such a long distance will start to increase lactate accumulation as the time take to complete 200m will substantially increase. Although the main energy source of 200m is anaerobic glycolysis, it is the lower end of it with minimal accumulation when compared to 300m +. You will start to train the the wrong portion of the energy system.

Look at using the chute for short distances (10-30m). If there is a rip cord that releases it, try running for 10m then releasing the chute.

The above answer is spot on (if you are training for speed that is!!). If that is the case then you must be looking at ditances that take less than 10 secs to complete for the PCr system to be the main energy system.

I prefer to use th bungee type cord for this type of training as the distances are only 25m max as I prefer to work on improving the start, movement mechanics and acceleration as well as the speed over this type of distance because unless you are running track you will never need to run much further than this for most other sports.

Don't forget you will need to run without resistance (whichever method you use) for the contrast.
