I play for the 1st xi rugby team at my school and we play to quite a high standard. I play lock and this year am playing really well. The only thing that is letting me down is my speed. I need to know how toincrease my speed? any training or general advice would be greatly appreciated?
Will taking protein shakes help my all round ability?
Thanks

Protein wont increase your speed or strength (not alone anyway).
As for speed, I believe that you will need to work on acceleration and reaction speed this deep into the season. Trying to increase top end speed prob wont help you so much with the distances you cover in a game.
I would look at foot work drills (ladders, stride canes, mini hurdles). complete these and other speed drills over short distances (10-20 metres). Make sure that you are fresh for the session. Dont do a heavy training session and then complete a speed session. Turn up 20 minutes early to do the speed session. You will also be looking at multi-directional speed and agility. These can also be completed in the same session. Keep it simple to start off with - straight line speed then incorperate different directional movements.
Pre season next year, you should be looking to increase top end speed and acceleration and try to maintain this throughout the season nor improve. Due to the nature of the activities, you will get some neuromuscular adatation which will make you more efficient at the movements so quicker.
