You need a throwing power exercises.
Essentially you are training the upper body so you need specific training goals for this.
I support the use of Plyometric Training with this program. You need also do a lower body training routine as well.
Here is a link to a site that has a intro program.

I was also wondering if you are doing a training program that increases lower body strenght as well.
It might be worth consider consulting a Sports and Conditioning Coach as well.
Hope this helps.

many throwing athletes will develop injuries dur to the nature of the throw. Look at strengthening and controlling the throwing shoulder with simple exercises. Research as shown that the deceleration of a powerful movement is the the time at which higher rates of injury occur. You will need to understand which muscles are involved in this process and work them specifically to the sport to aid an increased efficiency and decreased risk of injury of the body. Hugh forces are created in this event so gym based training will need to replicate these to help develop this. Problem that maybe highlighted in technique of exercises. Dont sacrifice poor technique to gain the desired resistance/force.
Ideally, a throwing coach is the best point of action for assistance. Look at www.brianmac.demon.co.uk as it may have a programme to follow for a javalin thrower.
Look at single arm movements (on both sides to reduce over dominance and therefore inbalances of left and right) once bilateral movements are successfully mastered. Olympic lifts (and variations) plus plyo's are good for general power power production but not specific enough for javalin. Small medicine balls that are easily held in a hand are great for upper body plyo's.
Look on the net for Calvin Morriss. He did a lot of strength and conditioning as well as movement/performance analysis for Steve Backley. There maybe some info available for you to use.

Thanks a lot guys, You have realy steered me to a place to start. This guy is also, at the moment is quite over weight and unfit. I can concentrate on that, while I do some research. I live in a fairly remote area of Australia, so help like this in invaluable.
Cheers, Sue
