I was wondering what a good peak heart rate is for a 17 or 18 year old for training zone reasons? Should mine be close to 200 or over at peak output? Whats the new word on heart rate monitors and which ones are most accurate?
the 220 - age equation isn't always right, however i have found probably the best method to measure this and that is by completing an exercise stress test.
I complete one of these every 4weeks, and it involves cycling on an indor trainer for a period of time, starting at 50watts output and adding 25watt increments every 1minute until you are completly exhausted.
you can complete this similarly on a treadmil by running as long as you can on a treadmill and increasing the incline and the speed everyone minute until you are completly exhausted, that will give you your exact max heart rate.
220 - your age. That number would indicate your MAX Heart Rate. Zone 1 would be 60 to 70%. Zone 2 would be 71-80% and Zone 3 would be 81-90%. Zone 1 is used generally for overall heart health. Zone 2 is used to burn more fat and calories and Zone 3 is for endurance athletes. For more information you may want to check out the book "Core Performance" by Mark Verstegen. I have the book and have found it very useful not only for my clients but for myself. He is a world renound fitness trainer and has worked with Mia Hamm, many football, golf and elite athletes.
I tend to agree with closesupport 220 minus your age is ok if your starting out and your fitness is ok but for the more exact you need to do the stress test and it can be done on a treadmill or turbo (be warned it aint easy and lives up to its name i regularly do them as my fitness level rises. GOOD LUCK AND ENJOY

Yes, the formula infomrs one that TRUE max hear rate can vary 15 beats either way so it's not exactly very accurate. The best form is as stress test.
I am 32 and according to the formula my max is 188 but it's actually 200.

Heart rate
When training at zone 3 (81-90% of your max heart rate) how long should you be training for.
