Why triathletes focus on mileage, rather than technique?

My first idea of triathlon was an "ironwill" man showing his hard face while biking in Hawaian view. So I go for my first Triathlon. Well, I did it good since I am a multi sportman, but some coaches here have this same wrong idea specially for biking and running, while swimming is a bit more technical, they say. When I ask them about Pose method of running, they do not know, the same for crank lenght, the same for other things...So I did a stop when my shoulder and knee told me, and started reading some PP articles, some books summaries, and practise technique and intensity instead mileage.
As a UK coach says, if you run/swim/bike 20 meters badly, what would happen in 21 km? I do not like an injury again. Also I like better results from a good technique basis.
