Olympic Chances:  No one would disagree that Grant Hackett is the overwhelming favourite to win his third gold medal in the men’s 1500m freestyle and in doing so become the first male swimmer to win three consecutive gold medals in the same event.

Following his below par performance in the 2007 World Swimming Championships, Hackett won the 1500m, 200m and 400m freestyle events at the Australian trials and seems to have rediscovered his form in time for Beijing.

The 200m and 400m freestyle will see Hackett pitched against Americans Larsen Jensen and Peter Vanderkaay who will be looking to continue America’s dominance in swimming. However Korean Park Tae-Hwan is the favourite to scoop the gold in the 400m freestyle following an impressive win the in 2007 World Swimming Championships and has subsequently been ranked top place in this event. Larsen Jensen should prove to be Hackett’s main competition in the men’s 1500m freestyle.
