Jamaica's Olympic chief has confirmed that a Jamaican athlete has failed a drug test from late June, although apparently it's not 'a big name'. Jamaica like Cuba, just north of them in the Caribbean Sea, also punches well above their weight in Olympic competition. They have recently had great success in the sprinting events; Asafa Powell and Usain Bolt have recorded the fastest ever 100m times and Veronica Campbell is the reigning women's 100m world champion.

Yet they train in facilities light years from those enjoyed by American sprinters such as Tyson Gay, who beat Powell to 100m glory and Bolt to the 200m title at last year's Osaka world championships. Thank heavens it is not a big name that tested positive because Jamaica are responsible for two thirds of the Olympics' blue ribbon event - the men's 100m.

Bolt is yet to confirm with his coach whether he will compete in the 100m-200m double. Yet he is favourite ahead of Gay, with Powell third. Bolt has form and the world record. Gay has the world champion status. Powell has the potential to destroy both. I'm crossing my trembling, sweaty, excited fingers for a swift, clean race.
