About Liu Xiang: Born in 1983, Shanghai, Xiang first began his career as a high jumper but soon turned to the 110m hurdles for which he began training in 1998. In 2002 he became the new junior world record holder for the 110m hurdles and the following year won bronze at the World Athletic Championships. He reached the final of the 110m hurdles in the 2004 Athens Olympics and won gold in a near perfect run which saw him finish 3 metres clear and equal of Colin Jackson’s previous record of 12.91 seconds. Outside of athletics Xiang is a renowned fan of karaoke.

Liu Xiang - Men's 110m Hurdles

Liu Xiang is the favourite to win gold in the 110m hurdles at the 2008 Beijing Olympics but will face stiff opposition from Cuban hurdler Dayron Robles. His popularity in China is partly due to the fact that his gold medal in Athens was the first Olympic gold medal ever won by a Chinese male in athletics. His top 3 finish also ended a twenty year baron spell of medals for the Chinese in track and field events.
