About Paula Radcliffe: An outstanding performer in the marathon, the only occasions Radcliffe has failed to live up to her reputation is at the Olympics. At the 1996, 2000 and 2004 Olympic Games Radcliffe was not successful in making the podium and most notably failed to finish either the 10,000m run or the marathon in Athens. However despite these failures Radcliffe has been largely dominant in the women’s marathon and holds the world record time of 2:15:25, following a sublime run in the 2003 London Marathon. Radcliffe has won the London Marathon on three occasions and went some way to atone for her failure in Athens by winning gold at the 2005 World Championships. Radcliffe’s running style is immediately recognisable by her nodding action and in June 2002 Radcliffe was awarded an MBE by Queen Elizabeth II for her services to athletics.

Olympic Chances: Despite her age and record at previous Olympic Games, Paula Radcliffe is still a strong contender for a gold medal in Beijing. A stress fracture in her left thigh had seriously jeopardised her chances of competing at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, let alone challenging for gold. However Radcliffe has since declared her intention to race and assured fans that she will be fit to compete in the marathon. The women’s marathon does not begin until August 17, 2008 and Olympic rules state that Radcliffe is allowed until the eve of the race to make a decision on her fitness, giving her extra time if she needs it.
