About Phillips Idowu: Famous for his colourful hair and piercings, Idowu looks set to finally make an impact at Olympic level. Previous Olympic appearances have not gone well for the Hackney-born triple jumper who finished sixth at the Sydney 2000 Olympics and in last place at the 2004 Olympics in Athens. However Idowu is now on course to be the first triple jumper since Jonathan Edwards to win a gold medal at the Olympics. In the 2006 Commonwealth Games Idowu put his previous disappointments behind him and claimed gold in the triple jump with a jump of 17.45m. Had he not been a triple jumper Idowu would likely have pursued one of his other loves of Basketball or American football, which he played during his school years
