Here's some good news for British fans and marathon enthusiasts worldwide. Paula Radcliffe, the three-time London marathon winner and two-time New York winner has reportedly recovered from her stress fracture to the femur and is apparently back running again. She arrived in Britain's training camp in Macau on Monday.
After finishing outside of the medals in the 5,000 and 10,000m events at the 1996 Atlanta and 2000 Sydney games, Radcliffe decided to up the ante by upping her mileage. She moved to the marathon distance with great effect, and has currently recorded four of the five fastest marathon times of all time. Her world-record time of 2hrs 15min 25secs is considered by the IAAF ranking system as one of the most impressive world records, ranked higher than Flo-Jo's long-standing 100m and 200m records as well as Michael Johnson's 400m record.
She entered the 2004 Athens games as a red-hot favourite. However after taking silly amounts of anti-inflammatory drugs to counter a temporary leg injury, her stomach absorption suffered as a consequence and she was forced to retire with 14km remaining. She also lacked the energy to complete the 10,000m race a few days later.
Since then Radcliffe has won a London marathon despite urinating in front of millions on live TV, had a baby, and spent a lot of time rehabilitatiing. She missed this year's London marathon with a foot injury. She is not the favourite she was in 2004 but the Olympics often finds a way of making miracles happen. She deserves a medal, and really a gold. I will make a pact. If Paula earns a gold, silver or bronze - I will enter the 2009 London Marathon. Her progress will now have to be carefully monitored.
