Biography:: Spent many years in the art field; now back in school studying in health field. Wrestled in high school; joined YMCA after graduation to get back in shape after months of mononucleosis. There I met a young Japanese man looking for someone with whom to practice judo. He showed me a few moves, and I’ve been doing some form of martial arts off and on ever since. I still admire aspects of Japanese culture, including judo, Zen and Toshiro Mifune movies, though I’ve lost respect for the country itself as they seem to have abandoned the love of nature that once informed their philosophies. I competed for many years, was judo champion of Tennessee two or more times, second in the Southeast in my weight class twice, and competed in the nationals twice, back when one had to qualify to do so. There I was confronted with the limitations of my skills. I currently participate in American “catch” or “hook” wrestling, which is old style Farmer Burns carny wrestling. I have taught judo on a volunteer basis over the years, and am currently looking for an opportunity to do so in the inner city of my town, though I find little interest so far in such a program. I have also been a karate/tae kwon do and boxing dilettante. I’ve also done a bit of rowing, but have not yet competed in that sport. Rigorous workouts have been a two-edged sword; I’m still in good shape, usually taken to be a decade or more than my actual age, but contact sports have taken their toll.
