Oh dear! For starters a seated position places much more pressure on the discs of the lumbar spine - then by adding a weight to it whilst flexing forward at the hip, you increase those pressures even further. Not to mention that the long lever of this exercise places extreme pressure on the lumbar spine. Since when is it better to isolate a muscle group in training? Thats usually a rehab requirement and they even know to progress to more compound movements. Muscles are designed to work in groups to "share the load" the way we were meant to. I would regard this exercise as contraindicated.

Statistically I would presume that most likely 9 out of 10 will progress to a serious PID ( prolapsed intervertebral disc) following prolonged aubuse to the lumbar discs. I agree with fitbizness that not only is the exercise contraindicated it is damn foolish ! The leverage and moment arms are far too great for the lumbar muscles to deal with especially flexing forwards from centre of gravity when at least 5000 newton forces are already going through the lumbar region whilst seated. Remember hardcore bodybuilders will always attempt the stupid exercises coz 'it's hard and not sissy like' and i can almost guarantee the minute joe public attempts this exercise he will become very familiar with the triage nurse at the A&E department. Hi there,
I agree it is not for the faint of heart, or those who fail to use adequate common sense with their load or others where it is contraindicated. I use it rarely in my training and under very close supervision with my athletes.
